Competency Based Learning seems like the best way to have students working together. When teachers give students the freedom of choosing what project to work on or what animal to do a research report on, they seem to be more engaged in their learning. Students enjoy having the freedom to choose their own learning. However, as a teacher I know how hard this can be. I have a hard time "letting go". I give explicit instruction and forget to give students a choice. In our school we have started the process and were trained on GLAD, which allows students more freedom on their learning. I am excited to start this process because it supplies lessons that require students to work together and not follow a text book, but rather learn by investigating and problem solving together. A lot has changed in education since I've been is school; and it's very important that our students know how to problem solve and work together. In order to do so teachers have to be willing to let students be noisy and work together to solve problems.
